These are my notes as I am learning & studying about herbs this week. I will share shorten notes on them here as I read.
Types of Herbs
Herbalists have made categories to describe what herbs do. These categories are sometimes called action-types. Many herbs can fit into more than one category because they can affect more than one effect on the body. Ginko for example its very a potent antioxidant that cleans up free radiclas in the body bt also enhances circulation in the microscopic blood vessels of the body.
Specifics & Tonics
These 2 terms refer to whether the herb targets a particular symptom or enchance the health of a whole organ or body system.
Tonics are taken long term with short term breaks sometimes.
Secific herbs are taken for brief periods or only when the symptoms are present.
Some herbs have several uses, they may function as a specific for one symptom and have a tonic use as well.
The" Anti's " herbals
The prefix anti means against. These herbs that fall into the antis are usually used to fit what ever follows the prefix. Such as an antiviral is used to fight viruses.
Adaptogens are a particular type of tonic that enhances the bodies ability to deal with stress. It strengthens the immune system and endocrine system which includes also helping the adrenal glands as well! When you have stress these glands get over worked but the adaptogens help repair the adrenal of other glands to help them word with your immune system! I think this is amazing!
Anti- inflammatories counteract the bodys production of chemicals that inflame tissue such as a histamine.
Antioxidants inhibit oxidation. These herbs will contain compounds that help prevent a particular set of chemical reactions that diseases have such as arthritis and macular degeneration. These chemical reactions are called oxidation reactions. They are offset by free radicals unstable molecules grab electrons forms table ones.Free radicals are neutralized by antioxidants!
Antispasmodics of course will help cramps & spasms in muscles.
