Why do many Christians hide on Halloween? I am not saying all Christians. Some. I used to avoid Halloween, thinking it was best for my kids, after learning of Halloweens pagan roots. But year after year since then I sought to find the right balance.
Then this year it hit me. It hit me hard. So many churches say they don't partake of the holiday yet have on the same night in a lot of cases Trunk Or Treats, or festivals. When I would take my kids to those trunk or treats, thinking it was the better thing to do because it was at church, you would see spooky dressed up people or spooky dressed up cars for Halloween. But gasp! I thought they avoided Halloween? That never made sense to me. Kinda’ hypocritical, if you ask me.
I was raised different. I didn't know the pagan roots of it. I just remember looking forward to mom taking us to buy awesome costumes each year and it being one of my favorite days of the year. And dad always took us door to door for candy. It was a thrill and rush to show off my costume to friends & family and to get free candy and walk with Dad and my two little brothers door to door! But in those days I did not know Jesus as my personal savior.
Now flash forward back to today. Did you pass out candy tonight? Why not, if you were one of the folks at home and didn’t. If you live in a high traffic neighborhood it would have been the best opportunity of any day of the year for you to show for a few seconds the LOVE of Christ to a child. Show interest in their costume hand them candy and a simple child's track of the Gospel. Tell them before they leave your porch God loves you. You never know what kids have never heard that before, like me when I was young. I had no idea God loved me and sent his son to die for my sin! I didn't know I didn't have to be alone during my middle school years when I had bullies tormenting me daily at school and no one would help me. My parents didn't know but I wanted to die because I felt so alone, if I had died at age 12,13 or 14 with no savior, what then???
This Halloween a verse keeps coming to my mind:
In the same way, let your light shine before men, that they may see your good deeds and praise your Father in heaven. -Matthew 5:16
Folks if we hide our light inside ourselves and keep our porch lights off during Halloween, we are missing a great mission field of hope for people. Imagine this for a moment. You could set up a free email account at gmail.com and make little note cards with a piece of candy taped to it for parents who come to the door with kids, that you could give them! And say if you need prayer please email me at this address and thank you for sharing your kids cute kids with me on Halloween. What a surprise the parent would have to get a treat to and open it when they got home to find a word of encouragement and a prayer email! What if one of the kids you saw that night reads your track and they ask Jesus into their heart and they no longer feel alone? WOW!! Remember Jesus went to sinners homes and ate with them to show them his love and teach them his kingdom. You have an opportunity to show his love at your front door some of you. TAKE IT!
So many things you can do at this time of year in those few short hours to let your light so shine to the world for JESUS mighty Yeshua!!!
